Presidential Address 2012 I
would like to first Thank a few people for helping me attain this position.
Last year at this time I explained that I was unable to accept the position
of President and ask for a one year deferment. The board and the membership
accepted that, which I thank you again for. In doing so this meant the John
Bowen, Outgoing Chair of the Board and Christy Nichols outgoing President
would have to remain in those positions for another year. They both
graciously agreed to do so and I thank them for that. I
graduated from the University of Arkansas Medical Science Campus (UAMSC) in
1977 with a certificate in Radiologic Technology. I completed an Emergency
Medical Technologist certificate in December 1977. While working in the field
for the next six years I worked full time as a RT, part time as an EMT and
went to school off and on at night (no online) attaining my Bachelors of
Science Degree in Radiologic Technology from UAMSC in December 1983. Since
graduating with that certificate and earning my degree my life and career has
consisted of: living in four states, getting married, having two children and
raising them, and working on and off in the field of Radiology. I have worked
in Routine, Diagnostic and fluoroscopy, OR and ER, Angiography, Nuclear
Medicine, and CT and education and training. I have worked in Physicians
offices, Outpatient Radiology Clinics, Orthopedic Clinics, Level One Trauma
center ER's, Colleges and Universities with 10 of those years in Education. In
2005 when I joined the SCSRT, Steve Strickland introduced me to Marge
Zurgsberger who was President at that time. She encouraged me to get involved
and offered the Student Council Chair position to me. I took it and ran with
it. I loved working with the students and getting to know the other members
of our society. From that point on I have been involved with the Board and
membership in one way or another. I would like to Thank Marge for that push
of encouragement that led me to this position today. I
am a Life time member of Girls Scouts of the USA and have 22 years of
volunteer service with that organization in Maryland and South Carolina. I
also worked for a brief period in the role of Field Executive and found
volunteering more enjoyable. I am an Assistant Scout master for Troop 121
Venturing Crew and have over 15 years of volunteer experience with Boy Scouts
of America. Volunteering and holding a variety of positions within both of
those organizations gives me great knowledge to lead the SCSRT as president. During
my term as President my goal is to increase communication throughout the
membership. With our profession and advancements in technology moving at such
a rapid pace, I believe our society needs to attempt to move at that same
pace as an organization and one way to do that is to increase communication.
By doing this I hope we can in turn increase knowledge and make information
more readily available for the membership. I believe the best and most
convenient avenue for attaining this goal would be through the SCSRT website.
Some
ideas for the website include:
We
are in the progress of making improvements in technology by purchasing new
laptop computers for specific needs, such as the annual meeting and use by
specific officers such as the Treasurer and Executive Secretary. We
have also stopped production of the Image Maker. This was a very time
consuming job for the editor and very costly for the Society. This was a part
of the SCSRT Strategic Plan in 2008-2009. The same information published
twice a year on paper can be available year round by posting the information
to the SCSRT website. I hope that improvements to the website will show that
the ending of the Image Maker publication is not a loss but an improvement. As
you all may have noticed there are no committee chairs or members listed in
the SAMS manual. I wanted to offer these positions to the membership. I
sometimes feel there are people out there that want to get involved but are
never given the opportunity. This will give everyone and anyone that
opportunity. If you served in a role as a Committee Chair or Committee
member, please complete let me know you would like to continue is your
present role for the next year. I would like to encourage students to get
involved by working on committees with the possibility of the next year maybe
chairing that committee. To
accomplish these goals I would like some help, in getting all this started,
and the best way to do so is by comments, suggestions, ideas and plans in the
way of feedback from the membership. People are now distributing a lime green
sheet of paper that I would like for you to take the time and complete or write
something down that would help me work to attain my goal and serve the
membership and this society in the best way I can. Thank
You, Jean
